Choosing the Right Footwear for Marathon Running
Footwear selection is one of the most important decisions a marathon runner makes. The wrong shoe can lead to injury while the right one supports performance and protects foot health.
Key Considerations
When selecting marathon footwear, consider your foot type (neutral, overpronated, supinated), the race surface, your weekly training volume, and any history of foot problems.
Getting the Right Fit
Feet swell during long runs. Shop for running shoes in the afternoon or after a run, with the socks you will race in. Leave a thumb's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
When to Replace Shoes
Most running shoes last 500-800 km. Signs of wear include collapsed midsoles, uneven tread and new aches after runs. Rotate between two pairs to extend life and reduce injury risk.
